Great Lakes 2T1A-VR I-ESON "the Outatime Flyer" |
LOM M137A engine
The engine that will power my Great Lakes is the Czeck built 6 cylinders, inline inverted, 180 hp LOM M137A engine.Performance and specs. of the 6 cylinders inline inverted Czeck engine. That's was not actually my first's choice but this was the engine coming with the project I aquired and with time I understood the good reasons of Don Sergent's choice upon this engine, which has powered several of the last Great Lakes he has built. The aircraft look with this engine can be compared with the Ranger Powered's, with same small front area and long cowling. The 4 cylinders 140hp version, suitable for a Menasco C4 cowling, would have been probably better for its original 1930 looking, but everybody's opinion to keep the extra 40hp convinced me to keep the 6 cylinders.
The M137A engine is the "naturally aspirated" version of the 6 cylinders configuration, and differs from the M337 which is supercharged and power rated up to 210hp. The 4 cylinders version of the LOM engine (M332) has been a reliable choice for many vintage and replicas aircraft such as Stampes, Chipmunks, Buckers, Ryans etc. These Czeck engine are very reliable and burn automotive gas. they are fuel injected and the mixture is authomaically controlled by the injector itself up to 4500 ft. altitude.
